In these years I have learned many different lessons at Social Justice High School. Every single class has taught me a different value. Social justice means the fight for justice and equality. These words have a deep meaning to me because social justice can help you go through different obstacles. For example, the violence on Chicago streets these past years has been unjust. There have been people I've known who have lost their lives because of gang violence. Gang violence has changed many people’s lives. Another unjust situation is the unequal rights between documented and undocumented students. Undocumented students deserve to have the same rights and same opportunities to keep studying and achieving their goals. This is when the word social justice comes into play. There have been times when students can’t receive scholarships because of their legal status, but that doesn't stop them from fighting for what they want.
To reach many things that I want in my future, I have had to overcome obstacles. It has been hard to find scholarships in order to keep going with my studies. Many people take their FAFSA eligibility for granted. Yet, my classes have shown me that if I want it I can get it. In my senior English class we always discuss life obstacles. It’s good to have a community to discuss different strategies that can help us.
Many people fight for their own rights. People do different things for equal rights to put social justice to work. In 2013, our school went through a really bad situation. Administrators at Chicago Public schools took out most of the A.P classes because they thought the students weren't capable of those classes. There was no reason to do this whatsoever. These changes were all based on the neighborhood stereotypes, and not any facts about how students were doing in our school. However, Social Justice High School students showed these administrators that we deserved those classes the same as other students from private schools. Together we fought to get them back. We practiced social justice in our actions.
My issue that I picked for my fire project was self image. This issue connects to social justice because there are many girls and as well as guys who go through so much because they think they’re fat or need to have the perfect body in order to call themselves pretty. There have been many deaths because of this issue. Girls have become bulimic and anorexic all because they don't feel they have the body they want. The perfect body seems to be only image the media shows. Models are almost always skinny, and if you’re not skinny you’re not consider pretty. Yet, our society should not be this way. It shouldn't be this way because body size doesn't determine if you’re pretty enough. What determines your beauty is the way you are on the inside as well as the outside.
