Global Context
Poor body image is not only a major problem in only place, but around the world. According to the Renfrew Center Foundation, “eating disorders affect up to 24 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide” (Eating Disorders 101 Guide: A Summary of Issues, Statistics and Resources,” 2003). It's a global problem because it's a major problem that you can find everywhere. Body image is most base on media, that's how many women across the world get ideas of them not being pretty or having a body that just make them look fat and ugly. "The beauty industry spends billions of dollars a year convincing women that they need to look thinner, younger and sexier"(Why Do We Struggle With Beauty and Body Image?) Based on the media many women across the world see stuff like advertisements of really thin women whom the media describes as the most beautiful women. They get to the point of them comparing themselves with the girls on TV and end up hating every part of their body.
"Eating disorders are seen around the world in every industrial country. But in Western culture, media has a huge influence on women's body image, and we definitely see higher rates of eating disorders in the West"(Why Do We Struggle With Beauty and Body Image?). There’s parts of the world where eating disorders, body image are the biggest problem that they have there. For example California is one of the greatest places in the world where the image of the body counts so much. It’s a major problem that over years it's been existing and expanding. Many of the ideas women by them having not being attractive come from the media. The West is full of insecurities because California is the home of to the entertainment industry and as well it has many beaches. But in the West not only women are the only ones who are concerned about their bodies but men as well. Global issues are so hard to talk about because there’s many issues that are around the world and when it comes to body image it’s hard to identify if they have eating disorders because it’s something that now everyone can notice about until is too late. “Just in one country is estimated that about 10 million women from all ages suffer from any type of eating disorders, and about 1 million man” (The Eating Disorder Foundation). There are many cases around the world that sometimes it’s difficult to solve them all but body image is a huge problem that is spreading more and more through the years.
